NIGERIA INTERNET REGISTRATION ASSOCIATION

Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) was founded as a stakeholder-led organization, charged with the management of the nation's country code Top Level Domain Name (ccTLD), dot ng. The transfer of the appropriate management of this important National Resource was coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on behalf of the Federal government of Nigeria.  Stakeholders within Nigeria’s Internet community participated in its formation.   It was established as an Incorporated Trustee on February 9, 2007.

The Association has a two-tier Board consisting of an Executive Board of Directors, and a Board of Trustees.  Whereas the Executive Board of Directors is led by the President, Mrs. Mary Uduma, the Board of Trustees is headed by the Chairman, Dr. Isaac Odeyemi. The NIRA Secretariat is headed by a Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Opeoluwa Odusan

Mission

To be the administrator of, and the non-governmental self regulatory body for the .ng ccTLD and its associated sub level domain names by maintaining and promoting the operational stability and utility of the .ng ccTLD and by ensuring cost effective administration, development and establishment of policy framework for the development and administration of the .ng ccTLD.

Vision

To be among the best Registries to be reckoned with in the world within the shortest possible time as measured by the satisfaction of our stakeholders, and the model for other ccTLDs

NIRA Operations Overview

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association adopted the the 3-R model (Registry/Registrar/Registrant model) of operation in the registration of domain names in the .ng ccTLD. The implication of this is that NIRA does not handle the registration of domain names directly. Registrations can only be done through NIRA certified Registrars.  Registrars are certified by NIRA to facilitate the registration, transfer, renewal, and modification of registration data for customers that apply for dot-NG domain names.  NiRA currently has 41 certified Registrars.  The Registrars are also allowed to appoint re-sellers for their operations.
